Help us Choose Our Next Book

The covers of 6 books the CEOs can choose to read next.
Which of these 6 amazing authors and their books should the CEOs in the Book Club read?

Decisions.

Decisions.

It’s no exaggeration to say that The CEO Book Club at Accelerate South Dade has read and discussed some of the finest business books in print during the last 2 years. World-class thought-leaders, whose work we’ve considered and who were generous enough to Zoom In with the club, include the likes of Bruce Turkel, Mike Michalowicz, Deb Calvert, David Meerman Scott, Seth Godin, Ann Handley, and Charlie Gilkey.

As that list of incredible thinkers illustrates, I usually curate the reading list quite ably, but today, deluged by a torrent of exciting options, I can’t make up my mind. So, I’m pulling a Brexit (of sorts) and referring the matter to the people.

Let the vox populi decide.

In my own defense, however, I was at least able to generate a list of 6 exciting contenders for the CEOs to choose from.

Which do you think we should read next?

  1. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, by James Clear

Like matter, which is composed of constituent atoms, much of our behavior is composed of habits, or things we do on automatic pilot. And like atoms, that can be either positively or negatively charged, your habits can either be good or bad. But, as author James Clear suggests, what if there was a science-based approach to engineer habits that empower you to live better? And, as the CEO of your own company, what would cultivating powerful new habits and dismantling unhelpful ones mean to YOUR bottom line?

  2. Fanocracy: Turning Fans into Customers and Customers into Fans, by David Meerman Scott and Reiko Scott

One of our heroes, David Meerman Scott has teamed up with his daughter, Reiko, to pen this timely book about the future of your business.

“Fanocracy, they claim, “ is the future of business because the relationship companies build with their customers is often more important than the products and services they sell to them.”

It’s no longer enough, they argue, to merely satisfy customers needs, our job is to “create meaningful human connections” that turn customers into loyal fans. In this highly anticipated book for Scott fans, David and Reiko promise to show the way.

  3. The Miracle Morning for Entrepreneurs: Elevate Yourself to Elevate Your Business by Hal Elrod and Cameron Herold

Jessica Welsh, CEO of Gringa Flan swears by this book. Chock-full of powerful techniques to super charge your day, Miracle Morning authors promise that you will experience explosive growth and accelerated success in your business and the rest of your life. It’s a tall order, but if even 1/10th of it is effective, it might just change your life.

  4. Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts, by Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW

Can you go wrong with a book that scores 4.7 stars out of 5 from 1,078 Amazon customer reviews? Brené Brown’s latest tome made it to the top of many best book lists in 2018 and was named one of the best books of the year by Bloomberg. It even comes with its own hour-long Netflix special titled, Brené Brown: The Call to Courage.

Brown’s message is simple and impactful: leadership is not about titles and credentials, it’s about having courage and taking responsibility (aka daring to lead).

So how can we improve on this front? How do we cultivate the courage to lead in others? How can we inculcate these values inside the organizations we serve?

If you’re ready, Brené Brown has answers.

  5. Everything is Figureoutable, by Marie Forleo
Everyone from Seth Godin to Elizabeth Gilbert to Anthony Robbins thinks that Marie Forleo’s book is one you owe it to yourself to read. Marie Forleo, the host of MarieTV and the Marie Forleo Podcast thinks that Cheryl Strayed said it best: “a must-read for anyone who wants to face their fears, fulfill their dreams, and find a better way forward.”

Let’s be honest, sometimes we feel utterly stuck and discouraged by setbacks, but Marie reminds us not to freak and just chill. Why? because EVERYTHING is figureoutable.

Wise words from a remarkable entrepreneur that has much to teach us.

  6. A Liberated Mind, How to Pivot Toward What Matters, by Dr. Steven C. Hayes

As a voracious student of self-development books, this is the volume I am personally most excited about. It’s author—clinical psychologist Dr. Steven Hayes—is the founder of Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), a research-based approach to working with (never against) the commands of the vicious “dictator” residing somewhere between our two ears.

    You know the one.

That inner voice that tells us we’re not nearly good enough to achieve the things we envision and deeply desire. In a Liberated Mind, Dr. Hayes promises to give you psychology’s best answer to how to deal with negative thoughts and feelings that arise in the pursuit of a better life. He calls them the “six pivots” and his extensive clinical research has shown that they are the tools we need to achieve what matters most.

There you have it—six amazing books worthy of your careful consideration. In an ideal world, we’d read all six, but even then, we still have to pick a starting point.

Will you help us?
